The game can be played with up to 4 players, either locally or via the Internet. Each player takes turns to place blocks, first in the top row, then the bottom row. Each player controls a single tetris playing field in a three-dimensional space, with the tetromino blocks changing orientation in real-time. Blocks can fall from the top and bottom rows, allowing players to create a tetromino of their own shape to fill the playing field. Once the playing field is completely filled, the last remaining blocks fall, and the player with the most points wins.
The game is designed to be as similar to the original Tetris as possible. While the game's standard mode allows for customisable settings, Tetris Worlds includes most of the items and options available to the original game, with the exception of bonus levels, enhanced graphics, and customisation.[2]
Tetris Worlds supports both one-player and multiplayer modes, and comes with an adjustable Difficulty level and a low-difficulty mode to allow players with little experience to have some fun. Unlike the original game, which only allows for a maximum of four players at a time, Tetris Worlds allows for up to six players. Players are ranked according to their performance on the leaderboards, and the "Best" player is the player with the highest score in all three difficulty levels.[2]
An online multiplayer mode, which can be played with up to 6 players, is also available. While all of the multiplayer modes in the original Tetris are supported, two features were added to allow for larger multiplayer games. Unlike in the original Tetris, blocks cannot be rotated in multi-player mode. Furthermore, although there is no limit to the number of tetrominoes that can be made by a single player in the original game, in Tetris Worlds, multi-player players can only build tetrominoes with sides from 1 to 4.
The graphics have been improved significantly compared to the original game, with the tetrominoes being rendered in true 3D. Players can switch between high-definition and low-definition modes, which allows players to select a graphics quality comparable to the original game. A new feature in this version is the "3D Tetris" mode, which displays only the playing field and the falling blocks, as opposed to the original game which displays a complete 3D environment with the blocks.
